Making A Difference
Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights.

AI's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

In pursuit of this vision, AI's mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

AI has a varied network of members and supporters around the world. At the latest count, there were more than 1.5 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in every region of the world. Although they come from many different backgrounds and have widely different political and religious beliefs, they are united by a determination to work for a world where everyone enjoys human rights.

AI is a democratic, self-governing movement. Major policy decisions are taken by an International Council made up of representatives from all national sections.

AI's national sections and local volunteer groups are primarily responsible for funding the movement. No funds are sought or accepted from governments for AI's work investigating and campaigning against human rights violations.

Creating Sustainable Peace

A Process Work Approach

Open Letter : "Reflections on 9/11 and Ground Zero" taken from Amy and Arny Mindell's website August 2004

To the USA AND ITS ALLIES, we appreciate the creation of a new, higher building at the site of Ground Zero, the place of the terrorist attack in Manhattan. We understand that this building may be the highest. This project is symbolic; we understand that it is meant to give hope and renewed sense of value to all who have suffered under attacks. In addition, we would like to suggest another symbol. A building that is round and flat at the top, not necessarily tall and peaked. Such a building could be named, " The ROUND TABLE AT GROUND ZERO".

" ROUND TABLE" symbolizes a new purpose for the building; awareness practice and research into dialogue and diversity. This new meaning for "Ground Zero" would show the U.S.'s desire of holding to the center in conflict, to the "zero" so to speak. In our minds, we would like the US to be proud of its consciousness, not only its strength; of its eldership and not only its power.

To TERRORISTS and FREEDOM FIGHTERS. Many have advised us not to speak with you as if you were not human.

These are tense times for all. We are all living in and trying to recuperate from trauma. If you can, please listen - even though we are from the US. At the same time that the US and her allies are trying to do the above, we dream that you too will make more use of consciousness. We understand you are saying that the US is dominating and imperialistic. However, no one has ever overcome imperialism without having a model of how to do it. We know that to reduce imperialism, you must consider thatis an outer and inner reality. Therefore, to model a new world, you must reduce imperialism by refusing to extend power or authority over innocent "others" in the interests of domination. We must all do that. We must all fight the dominating tendencies of hopelessness, depression, and the ecstatic intoxication of revenge and power. Then a real change will have occurred.

DEAR FRIENDS everywhere. Governments can only fulfill our highest dreams internationally if we can. Every world leader comes from a family. Every family member interacts with others. Realizing this, let's all study, learn and work together by exploring each and every tense relationship moment. If you want the world to change, show it how. Let no difficult moment pass in friendships, family, group, cultures and world. If needed, stop conflict and potential violence. Remember, that's only a first step. The next step it to understand where it comes from, its essence. Finally let's learn from history and the oldest lessons. Whatever is forbidden today, reappears tomorrow. Differences that are not valued today become the wars of tomorrow. Center yourself in awareness of the dialogue process, and not only in one side or another. And then show and ask the world to do the same. Thank you

Save The Children

Save the Children was founded in the United States in 1932 as a nonprofit child-assistance organization to make lasting positive change in the lives of children in need. Today we work in 19 states across the United States as well as in over 40 other countries in the developing world to help children and families improve their health, education and economic opportunities. We also mobilize rapid life-support assistance for children and families caught in the tragedies of natural and man-made disasters.

Save the Children is a member of the International Save the Children Alliance, an association of 26 independent organizations that provide child-oriented emergency response, development assistance and advocacy of children's rights in more than 100 countries.

The Nature Conservancy

This is a way of helping to save the last great places on earth.

Naming the Conservancy as a beneficiary is simple and has lasting effects. You can name it as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, insurance policy or financial account. After your lifetime the asset will go to them without going through probate and your estate is entitled to a charitable deduction for the amount of the gift.

The Red Cross

The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the largest independent humanitarian network in the world, with more than 100 million members across the globe. One of the most active members of this movement, the British Red Cross is a leading UK charity with 40,000 volunteers working in almost every community.

We provide a range of high quality services in local communities across the UK every day. We respond to emergencies, train first aiders, help vulnerable people regain their independence and assist refugees and asylum seekers.

We respond rapidly to disasters and conflicts around the world. We are also committed to longer term development and help other Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies build their capacity to deal with emergencies in their own countries.
